The Radix Name Service (RNS) is a now-deprecated naming protocol DAO that was intended to support the continued development of a domain name service in the Radix network, allowing human-readable names to be used in place of long on-ledger addresses and identifiers.
RNS was originally envisioned to progress under a formal foundation/DAO-style structure, but that trajectory did not reach its intended end-state during the broader downturn in the Radix ecosystem. The $RNS token was never released, and the planned governance steps were ultimately tabled in favor of ensuring the namespace could continue in a realistic, sustainable form.
As part of that community process, new open-source code for an alternative namespace was produced to ensure the core capability, a functioning naming service, could persist beyond any single organization or operating model. In parallel, the community established a social contract intended to ensure early supporters were looked after during the transition, preserving trust while the ecosystem moved from the original plan to a more feasible path.
As a result, RNS transitioned away from its initial roadmap and is deprecated, with continuity efforts centered on open-source alternatives and community-led stewardship rather than a heavyweight foundation/DAO framework.
