The **Alexandria Preview Event**, abbreviated **APE** by [RDX Works](/ecosystem/rdx-works) itself, was a half-day event held in the Flatiron District of New York City on 12 November 2021. It paired a roadmap keynote with the first hands-on public workshop in [Scrypto](/contents/tech/core-protocols/scrypto-programming-language), and it is the day Scrypto first became downloadable software: the [v0.1.0 release](https://github.com/radixdlt/radixdlt-scrypto/releases/tag/v0.1.0) was published to the radixdlt-scrypto repository at 16:26 UTC that afternoon, a month before the [Alexandria](/contents/tech/releases/radix-developer-environment-alexandria) developer release it previewed. The event was [announced on 30 September 2021](https://www.radixdlt.com/blog/ape-radix-alexandria-preview-event).

## Programme

The announcement set out a two-part day. The keynote, given by CEO [Piers Ridyard](/community/piers-ridyard) and Head of Product [Matthew Hine](/community/matthew-hine), covered the product vision and the release sequence from [Olympia](/contents/tech/releases/radix-mainnet-olympia) through Alexandria and [Babylon](/contents/tech/releases/radix-mainnet-babylon) to Xi'an. It was live-streamed to the Radix YouTube channel and survives there as ["Alexandria Preview Event - APE Radix - Live Keynote from New York!"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hn20w1gmpMw). Lunch and an open Q&A followed.

The afternoon was the workshop: developers of any skill level were invited to install the pre-release tooling and write their first [blueprints](/contents/tech/core-concepts/blueprints-and-packages) and [components](/contents/tech/core-concepts/components), with a dial-in option for those who could not travel. It was led by CTO Russell Harvey and was also recorded, as ["Scrypto Developer Workshop Recording - APE Radix, Nov 12th 2021"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=he9TunEXgcY). Five days later Radix pointed developers at that recording as the starting point for [installing and using Scrypto](https://www.radixdlt.com/blog/radix-alexandria-scrypto-is-coming), which makes the workshop a piece of documentation as much as a piece of the event.

## The first Scrypto release

What separates APE from a conference talk is that software shipped from it. In the 17 November 2021 post [Radix Alexandria: Scrypto is Coming](https://www.radixdlt.com/blog/radix-alexandria-scrypto-is-coming), RDX Works wrote that "at APE, we released a preview form of Scrypto and the other Alexandria tools on Github that you can start working with right away". The repository bears this out. [v0.1.0](https://github.com/radixdlt/radixdlt-scrypto/releases/tag/v0.1.0) is the earliest tag in radixdlt-scrypto, published on 12 November 2021 at 16:26 UTC, and nothing precedes it; the repository itself had been created on 19 July 2021 and had carried no tagged release in the four months since.

That release was a preview rather than the release proper. Alexandria launched a month later, on [15 December 2021](https://www.radixdlt.com/blog/alexandria-scrypto-is-here), and its [v0.2.0](https://github.com/radixdlt/radixdlt-scrypto/releases/tag/v0.2.0) tag carries the one-line release note "This is for Alexandria release". So the sequence is a preview at an event, then the developer release: APE put a tagged, installable [asset-oriented](/contents/tech/core-concepts/asset-oriented-programming) toolchain in front of a room of developers before there was a product to attach it to.

## Place in the developer-outreach sequence

APE is the first entry in a run of in-person Radix developer events, and it is the reason the [Scrypto Developer Event](/contents/history/scrypto-developer-event) in Lisbon on 9 April 2022 is better described as the first event dedicated wholly to Scrypto developers, and the first in Europe, than as the first of any kind. By Lisbon the language had moved on two releases, to v0.3.0 of 16 February 2022, and attendees were working with released rather than preview software. The line continues through the [Austin Developer Event](/contents/history/austin-developer-event) at Consensus 2022 and, later, the university [DApp In a Day](/contents/history/dapp-in-a-day-workshop-1) series.

One detail of the format did not carry forward. APE offered a remote dial-in so off-site developers could write blueprints alongside the room; Lisbon live-streamed the talks and took audience questions by phone, but the workshops themselves were for the people present.
